The freezer is locked after a ‘disturbing alarm’: an American janitor is sabotaging scientific research

She wrote that the janitor was hired through Daigle Cleaning Systems CNN. The guy worked in the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute building for a few months in 2020. This is a small, private, technical university in upstate New York.

‘don’t turn off’

The scientific samples were kept in a refrigerator in the university building, which had to be kept at -80 degrees. When the temperature rose or fell by 2 degrees, the alarm went off.

The latter occurred in September 2020. While awaiting an emergency repair by a mechanic, a note was taped to the freezer stating that the thing was making a sound, but could not be stopped under any circumstances. The newspaper also wrote: “Do not clean the area.”

The janitor then heard “disturbing alarm sounds,” as he later called them during the trial. He indicated that he wanted to be useful by flipping the emergency switch. He thought this caused the energy to appear, but it actually exploded.

The switch flipped

Then the temperature in the freezer rose to -32 and twenty years of research was wasted.

The janitor was not brought to court by the university, but the company the guy worked for. This is the notion that the caretaker should have been better trained and supervised in their work. So the company will have to pay $1 million in damages.

It is not known when the court will issue its ruling.
