19 people have already died in a major Legionella outbreak in Rzeszow, Poland. This is demonstrated by the new balance of health services. All the deceased also suffered from other health problems.
One hundred and sixty people became infected with the bacteria. Most of them come from Rzeszów, a city with a population of 196,000 located 250 kilometers from the capital, Warsaw.
Legionella bacteria can cause a serious lung infection. Infection poses risks, especially for people with a weakened immune system or with diseases such as diabetes or heart and lung disease. Smokers and the elderly are also at greater risk.
Respiratory contamination occurs after inhaling bacteria through water spray or air conditioning, for example. Bacteria grow best at temperatures between 25 and 45 degrees. Growth is inhibited above 55 degrees, and above 60 degrees the spores die.
