US Ambassador to Afghanistan Taliban leaves for Qatar for talks with Ultima Ora

(ANSA) – Washington, Aug 09 – The US ambassador to Afghanistan travels to Doha, Qatar, urging the Taliban to halt their military offensive and negotiate a political agreement. This was announced by the US State Department last night.

“Ambassador Salme Khalilzad will be in Doha to assist in implementing a joint international response to the rapidly deteriorating situation in Afghanistan,” the department said in a statement.

“The only way to bring stability and growth in Afghanistan is for the Taliban to stop their military offensive and negotiate a political agreement,” the statement said.

“The intensification of the Taliban military offensive, which has caused civilian casualties and human rights abuses on both sides, is of great concern,” the US report said.

Former US President Donald Trump has decided to withdraw international forces. Current President Joe Biden has postponed the deadline for a few months, but US and foreign forces will leave the Asian country altogether by the end of this month. The rapidly advancing Taliban now control at least five of the nine northern provincial capitals and are fighting the other four.
