Very few Russian goods in Dutch ports, more from America

Cargo deliveries from Russia to Dutch ports have fallen sharply since last year as a result of the country’s invasion of Ukraine. Most came from America. A total of 622 million tons were loaded and unloaded in the Netherlands, 1.2 percent more than the previous year.

Although supplies from Russia have declined, most of the goods in 2022 came from that country. New figures from Central Statistics Office (CBS). Supply from Russia fell by around 32 percent, but in absolute terms the country was still the largest supplier of cargo to Dutch ports.

This changed only when additional EU sanctions on oil and coal took effect in December: in the first quarter of the year, most of the goods came from the US.

Due to the loss of Russian gas through pipelines as a result of economic sanctions, more gas was delivered through the ports in the previous year: supplies increased by 60 percent, totaling 16 million tons. Supply from the US will double compared to 2021.

Oil and petroleum products were 5.5 percent higher, mainly from the Middle East, Egypt and Angola. Deliveries from Russia actually fell by 24 percent in that area.

The delivery and disposal of containers fell in 2022 and the war reflected this: the number of containers to and from Russia fell by 79 and 70 percent, respectively.

From Ukraine, especially in the mineral sector, there was a significant decline: from that country fell from 1.5 million tons in 2021 to 160 thousand tons a year later.
