An air tragedy on Monday during a flight from the US city of Miami to Santiago, the capital of Chile. The Boeing 787-9 pilot suddenly felt unwell and stumbled into the toilet during the flight. He never returned to the cockpit. Crew members found the man lying in the toilet. He was going to have a heart attack.
The flight from Miami to Santiago usually takes about eight hours. According to Chilean media, the drama on the flight took place on Monday evening, about three hours into the flight. The LATAM airline captain indicated that he was not feeling well at all and went to the toilet, where he collapsed.
While some of the crew later did everything they could to resuscitate the unconscious pilot, the other two pilots of the three-man pilot team on Flight LA505 immediately changed course for the emergency landing. Although the plane with 271 passengers was on the ground after only 28 minutes at Panamanian Tocumen Airport, all the pilot assistance came too late. The man took his last breath on the plane and was officially declared dead on the ground.
According to the German newspaper “Bild”, some passengers reacted somewhat angrily after the unplanned landing at Tocumen International Airport in Panama City. There was a particular lack of understanding about the way they were received after the drama. One passenger wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter: “Passengers have simply been disembarked on Flight LA505 from Miami to Santiago in Panama. No Latam staff here, no information. Looks like the pilot is dead. We are disembarked here in the middle of the night.” night without any information.” The affected passengers were eventually transferred to the Chilean capital on another flight.
“25 years of experience”
At LATAM Airlines, there is mainly panic. “We are deeply affected by what happened and would like to express our deepest condolences to the family of our employee,” the statement read. “We are very grateful for his 25 years of experience with us and his valuable contribution to our team. This man excelled in dedication and professionalism.”
The company also states that all necessary safety regulations were followed to save the life of the pilot on board the Boeing 787-9, but unfortunately the assistance was of no use. The airline described the incident as a “distressing and unexpected situation”.
