A 1990 Mazda MX-5 won first prize in a modification contest organized by Hot Wheels, the concept car manufacturer. Toy company Mattel makes a miniature version of the modified car. It will soon be available in game stores around the world.
The winning car was built in the shed of Chris Watson from New Zealand. He was one of the 10 finalists for the Hot Wheels Legends Tour 2023 competition. To get to this final, you first had to win a local competition. Unfortunately she was unable to participate in Belgium or the Netherlands. This was possible in France and Germany.
The main prize is that your car will be released as a 1:64 scale car model. One of the jury members is the famous American TV presenter Jay Leno, known from The Tonight Show on NBC.
Winner Chris Watson named his converted 1990 Mazda MX-5 “Chimera,” also known as a monstrous creature from Greek mythology. The maker of the forlorn-looking car was inspired by cyberpunk – a genre of science fiction – and Japanese Kaido Racer culture.
The car received, among other things, subtle opening LED headlights, extra-wide fenders, a new, futuristic taillight bar, and a custom-made spoiler reminiscent of a shark’s fin.
The Fast and the Furious
The interior looks very “cyberpunk”. On a seemingly useless screen there is the phrase “Warning!” “Jeopardy”, a reference to the “Fast and Furious” action film series.
