Derek Chauvin, the former cop who killed George Floyd, has been stabbed in prison

The attack occurred at the federal prison in Tucson, where there have long been security problems and staffing shortages, according to the Associated Press. US prison authorities confirmed in a statement that a prisoner in Tucson was attacked at approximately 12:30 local time on Friday afternoon. According to the statement, prison officials performed “life-saving” measures before transporting the victim, whose name was not mentioned, to the hospital.

No prison staff were injured. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) was called in and is investigating the events. Visits to the jail in Tucson are not possible at this time.

Chauvin, 47, has been imprisoned in Tucson since August 2022. He was then transferred from a maximum-security state prison in Minnesota. The former police officer is serving a 22.5-year prison sentence for Floyd’s murder and 21 years for violating Floyd’s civil rights.

On May 25, 2020, Chauvin pressed his knee on Floyd’s neck for 9.5 minutes during his arrest, after he tried to pay with a counterfeit $20 bill at a store. Video footage captured of the incident shows Floyd suffering from shortness of breath. “I can’t breathe anymore,” Floyd shouted, among other things, before passing out and dying.

Floyd’s death sparked outrage in the United States and around the world, sparking global “Black Lives Matter” protests against racism and police brutality. Three other officers who were present during the incident were given reduced sentences.
