The 130-times Dutch international, he no longer sees a future for himself as captain of Ajax. “After almost 11 years on the board, I’m done. We went through very nice things, but it was also a very difficult period,” says Van der Sar, who defended the goal for Ajax between 1989 and 1999.

“I am very grateful to the people I met and worked with during my second career at Ajax for what we achieved and experienced. Now I need to distance myself, relax and focus on doing other things.”

He will hand over his duties to his fellow Executive Board members from June 1, 2023. Van der Sar has been formally requested by the Supervisory Board (RvC) to stay on until August 1 to ensure proper transfer of national and international files.
