The Hopman Cup, the mixed national team tennis tournament, is back. Elise Mertens and David Goffin defend the Belgian colors on the cobbles in Nice. In their first match, the Belgians lost to Croatia.

Belgium can no longer pull the towel in the confrontation with Croatia. In the deciding mixed doubles, Vekic and Koric defeated Elise Mertens and David Goffin on Thursday night. The Croats pulled it off after a superlative run.
Belgium will play Spain on Friday. World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz and Rebecca Massarova (WTA-72) are the opponents. The group winners play the final against Denmark, France or Switzerland on Sunday.
David Goffin hit the sand in the second singles match of the Hopman Cup match against Croatia. The 32-year-old Belgian lost to Borna Coric (ATP-15) after a tie-breaker in the Super Bowl.
Because of Goffin’s loss, the mixed doubles will have to make the decision. Mertens and Goffin will compete against Vekic and Coric tonight. Tomorrow confrontation with Spain awaits.
A smooth first hurdle for Elise Mertens in the Hopman Cup. However, she was ranked No. 22 in the world with Croatian Donna Vekic. Our compatriot was not impressed and controlled the match. After two sets, each lasting half an hour, the score was 6-2, 6-2.
Thus Mertens takes Belgium’s first point against Croatia. David Goffin’s match against world number 15 Borna Couric will follow at 5pm. Finally there is mixed doubles.
