What’s new in iOS 15
iOS 15 is a major update with lots of new features and improvements. We’ll list the most important ones here, but you’ll notice minor and major changes throughout the system.
FaceTime greatly improved
Apple is eliminating the biggest frustration of FaceTime with iOS 15. It’s always been just for Apple, but soon you can also connect with people who have an Android phone or a Windows PC. You can simply invite participants via a link that they can open in their browser. But Apple goes further.
Video calls will feel more natural with smart tricks with voice and images. Spatial audio comes to the video calling app: if a participant is placed in the top left of the screen, the audio also appears to come from that direction. The sound isolation feature allows your voice to be crystal clear, without background noise. If you switch to Wide Spectrum, you’ll hear all the sounds. In terms of sound, it is therefore a mustache, and this also applies to photos: FaceTime now works with the portrait mode that you already know from the camera app. Your face becomes in sharp focus, and the background becomes blurry – so you focus more on yourself. Later this fall, it will be possible to watch videos or listen to audio together more easily via FaceTime.
Improve your focus with focus
Is the iPhone always swallowing your attention? Focus is the magic word! If you need to focus on something or just want to relax, Focus ensures that notifications and apps are filtered. Think of it as a less strict alternative to Do Not Disturb. You can activate different points such as work, leadership or personality – or create your own focus.
You can use it to silence notifications, prevent apps from being distracted, and tell your contacts that you’ve been unavailable for a while. But, for example, does focus work? Then you are available to colleagues. You can also set up special home screens with the apps and widgets you really need while in focus. If you activate focus on your iPhone, it will continue to work on your iPad and Mac.
Perhaps you were so overwhelmed by all the notifications on your iPhone that you ended up turning them off due to sheer misery. Feel free to turn it back on, because in iOS 15 it becomes more manageable. Your iPhone collects notification overview several times a day, containing the most interesting notifications, arranged in order of priority. By the way, really urgent messages are still delivered instantly. Notifications will also look more visible in the future, with a profile picture for contacts or a larger app icon.
Smart Photo Features
The following innovations show that the Photos app could benefit more from the artificial intelligence of your iPhone
- Perfect music for a retrospective. Have you ever created memories in photos? Those wonderful collections of photos and videos with atmospheric background music? From now on, your iPhone will search for music that perfectly matches your memories, from Apple Music’s vast catalog. Nice too: from now on, you will have a much greater influence on the formation of your memories, so that they become more personal.
- Visual search. The image search function has gotten smarter in recent years. For example, search for “flower” and you will see all your photos with flowers. But iOS 15 goes one step further and recognizes exactly what kind of flower it is. Your iPhone can tell you everything about the world around you: about plants, pets, artwork, attractions, and books.
Is there text on the image? Your iPhone can now “read” it and then handle it. For example, take a picture of a phone number and tap the number to call it. Or copy all of the text and paste it into an app like Notes. It also works with handwritten text. It’s still unclear exactly what iPhone Livetext devices will be arriving at: it differed slightly in the beta phase.
New and more complete weather app
New animated backgrounds give you an instant impression of the weather in a particular location. There are now thousands of variations showing clouds, precipitation, and the current position of the sun. Right below that, the most important data is displayed in a graph – so you can see what to expect at a glance.
A good addition are the weather maps. Large weather maps are available showing temperature, air quality and precipitation. Zoom in and out as much as you want. If you open the precipitation map, you can also choose animated radar images: these images show the path and intensity of showers. In the future, you can also receive notifications when it starts to rain or snow, but this functionality is being tested for the first time in Ireland, among other things.
shared with you
Messaging is the place to exchange all kinds of information with contacts, but then it’s hard to find everything again. Things shared with you through the Messages app will now appear in the dedicated Shared with you section of the corresponding app from iOS 15 onwards. You can find links in Safari, images in Photos, songs, playlists in Music, etc. You can also reply instantly from those apps. Also nice: if someone shares multiple photos with you in messages, they appear as a stack that you can scroll through.
You may have to get used to Safari more than others. Everything is still there, but it takes some research. What immediately catches the eye is that the title and search bar are now floating at the bottom of the screen. This makes it easy to operate your iPhone with one hand, for example when entering a web address. You only write with your thumb. If you have multiple tabs open, you can swipe from one tab to another in a jiffy. There are also tab groups for storing linked tabs. Of course, everything syncs to your Mac and iPad.
The Safari homepage in iOS 15 is very similar to Safari as we have known it from Mac for a year. You can choose your own background image and adjust the order of the displayed items (eg Favorites and Frequently Visited). Or just hide a few items – a relief if you’re not fond of the “shared with you” feature just discussed. Also borrowed from the Mac: Extensions from other apps, to give Safari additional features. Developers, for example, Adblockers and password managers are already working on it.
Keys and ID in Wallet
Do you still take your wallet with you when you go shopping? All digital versions of your debit card, boarding pass, and loyalty card are in the Wallet app. In iOS 15, a few things were added. What about the keys? Your front door, your office, your hotel room: they can all be opened with your iPhone – provided the necessary support is built in. And it doesn’t stop there: it will soon be possible to store your ID, driver’s license or passport as a digital copy in Wallet. By the way, this is still in the future for us: at the moment this only works in a few participating countries in America.
