A hunting trip almost ends in death for Charles Gregory, a 25-year-old from Florida. He ran into trouble with his boat off the coast of St. Augustine and drifted for miles out to sea. After 35 hours of hell he was rescued, dehydrated but in good spirits.

Things got worse when Gregory left his boat around four o’clock on a Friday morning, something he had done many times before. But the tide was coming in faster than he thought, and a wave battered his boat, less than four meters long. Gregory fell into the water, but was able to rise again. The tide quickly carried him out to sea, while his boat partly sank and its engine out of action.

He’s been stung by jellyfish and seen sharks, too. “He was terrified,” his father, Raymond Gregory, told CNN. “He says he had more conversations with God in those 30 hours than in his entire life.” It sat in the day in the flat sun, but the night was even worse. “It was burning and the wind was blowing. It was very cold in those waters,” he said.

Gregory did everything he could to keep his canoe afloat, even disconnecting the engine. He took off his swimsuit to wave it at planes and boats, and he was seen by an airplane about 12 miles from shore. He was rescued at around 10am on Saturday after a massive rescue operation involving eight different agencies.

“He is exhausted, dehydrated and also suffers from rhabdomyolysis,” says his father. This is a condition in which damaged muscle tissue is broken down and the contents of the muscle cells enter the bloodstream. It is made worse by dehydration and can lead to kidney damage, muscle pain, vomiting and confusion.

The Coast Guard calls on everyone who goes to sea to take adequate safety measures. Gregory only had an inflatable pillow, but no life jacket. He had a phone with him, but was unable to report his location.
