More and more participating countries are withdrawing from the Eurovision Song Contest

Three countries – Montenegro, North Macedonia and Bulgaria – will not be on the stage of the Eurovision Song Contest in Liverpool in May. The trio appears to be withdrawing due to the high costs.

Due to the invasion of Ukraine, Russia is not welcome at Eurovision 2023 in Liverpool. Therefore, other participating countries were asked to pay a higher registration fee. The cost is too high for Montenegro and North Macedonia: they withdrew. Participants typically bear about 5.75 million euros in organizing state costs from 9 to 19 million, depending on the ambition of the production.

Even Bulgaria says it may not participate in the competition at all in the future. Bulgaria will not participate in Eurovision 2023, and most likely will not participate in future editions. After analysis, it was decided that this program was no longer interesting for the announcer.

It is also uncertain whether Moldova, Armenia and the Czech Republic will participate in 2023. In recent years, Hungary, Russia and Belarus have already disappeared from the list of participants for various reasons. Thus, the volume of 2023 appears to be the least occupied edition since 2014. This week we will know if any countries will withdraw, when the regulator EBU announces the list.
