Traditionally, voice assistants like Siri, Alexa, and Google Assistant have voices that resemble female voices. Many industry experts have criticized it, as it will reinforce gender stereotypes. Apple was relatively early on in introducing the male Siri voice: it actually existed in 2014. However, the female voice remained the norm for a long time. Only if you change the option do you listen to Siri mention. This has changed since iOS 14.5: When you configure your iPhone, you’ll immediately be asked if you prefer Siri male or female.

With a gender-neutral voice, Apple is taking the next step toward a more diverse and inclusive society. It is not yet known when the Dutchman will receive the non-binary vote.
