Gender-neutral Siri can only be heard in iOS 15.4 if you set Siri to US English. This is how we do it:

  1. Open the Settings app and go to “Siri & Search”;
  2. Choose “Language” and select “English (US)”;
  3. Go back to Siri & Search and tap on Siri Voice;
  4. Select “Vote 5” at the bottom.

Traditionally, voice assistants like Siri, Alexa, and Google Assistant have voices that resemble female voices. Many industry experts have criticized it, as it will reinforce gender stereotypes. Namely, it could mean that women are the ones who need to be there for you at all times of the day. In addition, voice assistants can seem very submissive.

Apple was relatively early on in introducing the male Siri voice: it actually existed in 2014. However, the female voice remained the norm for a long time. Only if you change the option do you listen to Siri mention. This has changed since iOS 14.5: When you configure your iPhone, you’ll immediately be asked if you prefer Siri male or female.

With a gender-neutral voice, Apple is taking the next step toward a more diverse and inclusive society. It is not yet known when the Dutchman will receive the non-binary vote.
