The Attorney General warns: “Frauds are increasing in these repair services.”

“After the successful intervention in a specific case, we would like to point out the dangers of rogue emergency recovery services,” the Public Prosecutor’s Office said. “A possible gang that posed as plumbers and claimed dozens of victims across Flanders could be traced and identified.”

The investigation led to a search of the home of a 28-year-old Dutch man from Locristie. On April 26, the man appeared before an investigating judge and was arrested. The Council Chamber later confirmed his arrest.

Plumber, chimney sweep or locksmith

“The facts mainly occur when citizens suddenly have to urgently seek specialized help from plumbers, chimney sweeps, exterminators, locksmiths, etc.”

“By searching online, people land on an emergency repair service that promises to be on site within a few hours, often for only a small price. Once on site, they are charged exorbitant prices for the work performed.”

“Or the problem is supposed to be identified, but it turns out that additional materials are needed to make the repairs. A large sum must be paid upfront, but after payment is made, the repairman leaves and never returns.”
