There have already been several coaching sackings in the Jupiler Pro League this season, and there is currently another coach in the danger zone.
Namely, Ivan Leko. The current coach of Standard Liege has not been convincing so far and has received a lot of criticism, especially when he brought in a youth product from Standard and his reaction was not nice.
Through these actions, he gained little popularity with both Standard's supporters and the club's board of directors. There have already been speculations here and there about an early departure for the Croatian. But he didn't want to know about that right now.
“Things can change quickly, but I will always be clear about that,” Leko told SudPresse of Deila's questionable departure speech. “For now, I'm happy here and I see myself staying. With a better staff, better selection, better management…everything that can improve must improve. I will commit more than 100% so that we can make Standard possible. Achieving a future “Better, I'm sure of that too.”
It is therefore clear that Leko himself is not currently considering an early exit. Although he would have to be careful about this, since he had not succeeded immediately since his appointment. He managed to secure the save, but that's where it ends.
Met deze daden maakt hij zich niet bepaald populair bij zowel de aanhang van Standard als het bestuur van de club. Hier en daar werd dan ook al gespeculeerd over een vroegtijdig vertrek van de Kroaat. Maar daar wil hij voorlopig niet van weten.
"De dingen kunnen snel veranderen, maar ik zal daar altijd duidelijk over zijn," verwees Leko tegenover SudPresse naar het bedenkelijke discours van Deila bij zijn vertrek. "Op dit moment ben ik gelukkig hier en zie ik mezelf blijven. Wel met een betere staf, betere selectie, beter management, ... alles wat kan verbeteren, moet verbeteren. Ik ga me meer dan 100% inzetten zodat we Standard samen een betere toekomst kunnen bezorgen. Daar heb ik ook vertrouwen in."
Het is dus duidelijk dat Leko zelf momenteel nog niet aan een vroegtijdige exit denkt. Al zal hij hier wel voor moeten oppassen, aangezien hij sinds zijn aanstelling nog niet direct de pannen van het dak speelde. Hij slaagde er wel in om het behoud veilig te stellen, maar daar stopt het dan ook weer.
