According to his official schedule, Ying-wen only stopped in the US on his way home from an official tour of Central America. But the meeting caused great discontent in China.
For China, Taiwan is a renegade province, not an independent country. Therefore, according to Beijing, there can be no reconciliation between the West, especially the US, and Taiwan. The United States recognized the People’s Republic of China in 1979 and, in theory, should have no official contact with the Republic of China (Taiwan) under the one-China policy advocated by Beijing. Officially, the US recognizes the one China policy, but the US government provides significant military support to Taiwan.
China also reacted furiously when McCarthy’s predecessor, Nancy Pelosi, visited Taiwan last summer. The visit was seen as highly provocative by Beijing and raised tensions between the US and China to their highest level in years. In response, China conducted large-scale military exercises around Taiwan. Again, the Chinese government has threatened countermeasures. Several Chinese patrol vessels and an aircraft carrier were reportedly spotted around Taiwan today.
