There have already been 23 major weather disasters reported in the United States this year

The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Agency (NOAA) began counting major weather disasters in 1980. The previous record was in 2020, when 22 weather disasters, each causing more than $1 billion in damage, hit the country in the first eight months.

In total, these major disasters have caused more than $57.6 billion in damage in the United States since the beginning of 2023. It’s still less than a few years. The broken record is about the number of disasters, not the total damage. This year also 253 people died due to the storm.

“That record number is the latest confirmation of a worsening trend toward more costly storms, many of which bear the inevitable footprint of climate change,” said Rachel Cletus.

Florida was hit by Hurricane Italia in late August. Earlier, there were devastating fires in Hawaii, floods in California and severe frosts in the Northeast. With four months to go, the number of weather disasters could increase this year.

Last year, 18 major weather disasters caused more than $165 billion in damage in the country. Hurricane Ian in particular caused a lot of suffering (more than $112 billion in damage). 2017 was a record year for damage, with more than $383 billion in damage caused by Hurricanes Harvey and Irma.
