The Institute of Tropical Medicine (ITM) in Antwerp expects long waiting times at all Belgian travel clinics in the coming months. ITM says this is due to the huge increase in the number of travel advisories.

Mr. Drsource: Belgium

“From May to the end of August, we expect a large crowd at all travel clinics,” according to the report of the institute, which requests that immunizations be scheduled in a timely manner. In 2022, waiting times will be increased to seven weeks. Travel clinic UZ Gent also stresses that travelers shouldn’t wait too long to get in touch.

ITM doctors conduct approximately 2,000 travel consultations per month in the summer. Vaccines such as the yellow fever vaccine – mandatory for travel to Colombia, Senegal, Tanzania and Ghana – can only be obtained at a recognized vaccination centre.

“Waiting times can increase from the Easter break,” says Professor Ula Maniewski-Kelner, infectious disease specialist at the ITM Travel Clinic. Some vaccines also require multiple doses, with the first dose well before your trip. Travelers should plan their own travel advice from now on.”
