US invests 1.1 billion euros to remove CO2 from air | environment

The US government is pouring $1.2 billion (€1.1 billion) into two projects to capture CO2 directly from the atmosphere. It is the “biggest investment” in that technology globally.

“Simply reducing our emissions will not reverse the mounting impacts of climate change. We must remove the CO2 from the atmosphere that we have already emitted,” said Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm.

It will now be done on a large scale for the first time in Texas and Louisiana. Both projects aim to remove one million tonnes of CO2 per year each. This is equivalent to the emissions of 4,45,000 cars per year.

The most important company in this field, Swiss Climworks, currently has an installation in Iceland to capture 4,000 tons of CO2 from the air each year. ClimWorks will participate in the Louisiana project, where CO2 will be stored underground.
