Pharmacists continued to prescribe large amounts of painkillers, even though they already knew that painkillers could lead to serious addiction. Walgreens, CVS and Walmart have already been blamed in part for a painkiller crisis in parts of Ohio last November that killed several people.
Two districts
A judge yesterday ruled that two counties in the state of Ohio must be awarded damages Including CNN. Over the next 15 years, pharmacists will pay more than $306 million to Lake County and more than $344 million to Trumbull County.
The lawsuit was filed in 2018 by counties that found the chains were abusing their “position of responsibility and trust” and creating a “black market” for pain relievers. Medicines are easily available and can be obtained on prescription from pharmacists who dispense large quantities.
Fentanyl
There has been a veritable epidemic in the United States for years in which many people become addicted to strong pain relievers like oxycodone and fentanyl.
According to statistics from the CDC, 71,000 Americans died last year from an overdose of so-called opioids. Most of the victims took synthetic painkillers. Fentanyl in particular is the culprit.
