VRT President Delaplace on the issue of the documentary series De Pauw: “Today he will start conversations with victims about awareness of guilt and apologies”

Full letter from Frederick Delaplace:

And because the truth has its rights, I'd like to explain what's really going on in the “The Trial That Nobody Wanted” series of reports on the De Pauw case.

In recent years, VRT has done everything it can to raise awareness in the sector and society about the harmful consequences of inappropriate behavior and abuse of power. We will continue to do so and stand steadfastly with the victims. Yesterday, today and tomorrow.

In recent weeks, it has become clear that in the De Pauw case, there is finally a chance for the two sides to reach a discussion. A conversation in which De Pauw's party will take the lead and which is about a real sense of guilt and sincere apologies.

VRT management made contact with all parties on this matter and then decided in good conscience that they had to do everything in their power to make this conversation possible. The linear broadcast of Operation That No One Wanted does not seem to help us create the conditions that make such a conversation possible. It was therefore decided to postpone the broadcast indefinitely so that discussions between the two parties could begin with full discretion.

This is a decision we have made for the benefit of VRT and victims because we believe that the added value of a healing conversation cannot be overstated. The smallest opportunity for reconciliation in this situation is worth seizing.

Bart de Pauw has confirmed to us that he has begun those discussions today.

We remain hopeful that everyone will give the parties in this situation the opportunity to have an open discussion. This will only be possible if we all succeed in restoring peace. VRT will at all times continue to protect victims of inappropriate behavior.
