Ukrainian forces carried out the attack on Saturday evening in the coastal city of Crimea. Russia annexed the peninsula in 2014, but Zelensky is determined to reclaim the region.
The president also spoke against holding new presidential elections. She said: “This is not appropriate now. All resources should go towards our victory over Russia. We all realize that in times of war it is absolutely irresponsible to raise such a topic in a frivolous and comical manner in society.”
It is generally expected that the elections will be canceled at the end of March. However, there are also some negative votes.
The parliamentary elections that took place at the end of October had already been canceled due to martial law. There has been speculation in Ukrainian media about changes to the law that would make presidential elections possible even in times of war. Zelensky has been president since May 2019.
