4Gamers – Review | Layers of Fear is back and better than ever

With their remake of Layers of Fear, Team Bloober has once again shown why they’re known as masters of the psychological horror genre. The game includes the main storylines and all downloadable content from the previous games, as well as an all-new story called “The Writer”, which connects the two games. Using the powerful Unreal Engine 5, the game has stunning graphics that are absolutely breathtaking.

We usually don’t get scared easily when playing horror games, which is why some people say we’re soulless, but Layers of Fear is one of the exceptions to the rule. In your face some people! The Bloober team has done an incredible job making the game even more terrifying and hallucinatory with this new version. From the moment you start the game, you are drawn into a world full of suspense and mystery. And the tension is real. We don’t remember the original Layers of Fear 1 and 2 when we were so nervous behind our screen. Maybe we got a little weaker… There was a kind of joy we felt walking around the same room for twenty minutes solving a puzzle, only to get away from all sorts of trippy things chasing us and chasing the walls.

While the game remains true to the atmosphere, story, and themes of the two original games, not everything is the same. New puzzles and shapes have been added from existing puzzles, making the gameplay new and challenging. The new story connecting layers 1 and 2 is definitely worth it. The puzzles aren’t always hard, but you’ll probably get the hang of it: they’re always trying to make it really hard. Sometimes it’s “not that deep” and you need to get out of the room to reset. Layers of Fear is, in our opinion, one of the best puzzles in horror. The new puzzles they added confirmed this again. How they came up with all this stuff, no idea, but cool.

The atmosphere in Layers of Fear is one of the things that make the games unique. The game is dark, but also artistic. All of these things combine to create a very pleasant environment. There are jump scares, but not many. The ominous atmosphere combined with everyday objects taking on a very dark look is what makes Layers of Fear so intense. You can also add a very strong voice to that. All that combined with dark storylines that keep you on the edge of your seat, waiting for the finale, makes for a great game.

An important aspect to note is that Layers of Fear deals with very heavy subject matter. Players should be aware that the storylines are very dark. It’s sometimes necessary to take a mental health break while playing Layers of Fear, whether it’s because of the story or constant fear due to the atmosphere in the game. We had to do this (many times). No shame, no judgment.
