There’s no turning back: On Sunday afternoon, the new “Over the Ocean” crew set sail for Spain. The goal is to reach the other side of the Atlantic in one piece within 18 days.

With twelve in total, they are the BV fleet of Play4. In addition to the well-known service chiefs – Ella Leyers (33), Annelien Coorevits (34), James Cooke (37), Jonas Geirnaert (39), Elodie Ouédraogo (40) and Gert Verheyen (51) – a four-person film crew is also present. Just like last year, Captain Pete Smit and teammate Willem Stellamans are in command.
When they left Gran Canaria, Spain, the participants said goodbye to the loved ones they had traveled with. O’Draogo bid farewell to her husband Jerome, their son Remus, Korevitz and Lier by their sisters and Cook by her husband Dorian. Gernert provided comedic relief upon departure. He takes with him beads, mirrors, and other gifts, “Because I suppose we shall discover a new continent. And I want to say this on the home front: The code for all my bank cards is 5499.”
The final destination is Saint Lucia, the Caribbean group of islands. What’s special is that this time the cruise is anything but non-committal: BVs participate in the Atlantic Rally For Cruisers, a sailing competition that has been organized since 1986. It’s the largest of its kind and has about 250 participants each year. We’ll see how the famous Flemish works on Play4 over the next year.
