Endemic malaria infection detected in US for first time in 20 years

Four cases have been identified in Florida and one in Texas. This is reported by the US National Health Service CDC, which says in a health warning that these are the first endemic infections in twenty years.

Malaria is caused by a parasite transmitted by mosquito bites. Affected people may experience fever, chills, and fever-like illness. If the infection is not treated, malaria patients can develop serious complications and die. Most cases of malaria occur in children in sub-Saharan Africa.

Health officials in the United States are warning doctors, especially those in warmer southern states, to be alert to the possibility of infection. According to the CDC (Center for Disease Control and Prevention, ed.), those diagnosed with the disease have now received treatment and are “recovering.”

About 2,000 cases of malaria are diagnosed in the United States each year, mostly among travelers returning from malaria-endemic areas. Since 1992, there have been eleven malaria outbreaks in the United States. The last eight cases were reported in 2003 in Palm Beach, Florida.
