There was plenty of bad luck in the final leg of an exciting Tour stage two, as Victor Lafay kept ahead of the badly weakened peloton with a late attack. For example, Jonas Vingegaard was struggling with being unemployed before Jaizkibel was introduced. Lillian Calmagane (Intermarché-Circus-Wanty) was also not spared from bad luck, as he drove into a lot of nails thrown on the road by strangers. Just after the finish, the Frenchman showed off the many spikes that pierced his front wheel and shared the pictures via Twitter.
“Thanks for this kind of human mess,” he slammed in frustration. “I don’t think I was the only one who had a flat tire in the final.” The 30-year-old escape king doesn’t understand who it is in his head to put riders in such a dangerous situation. “You should know you can fall and get really hurt with these pranks, you idiots,” he finished maddening in his post.
In fact, it turns out that Kalmagane isn’t the only rider with tire spikes. Tom Pidcock said afterwards that he had a player idle for the entire final, but managed to drive to the finish despite some loss of control. Ineos Grenadiers use tubeless tires, which make the tires slowly deflate.
After that, almost the same stories rained down. Oliver Naesen, among others, immediately replied to Calmagane’s letter: “Me too,” wrote the Belgian in French. Jonas Rickart also posted a photo on Twitter.
