Queen Mathilde, 50, and Crown Princess Elizabeth, 21, completed their three-day working visit to Egypt. Both ladies were distinguished by their elegant clothes. Our princess appeared with a bag from the Belgian handbag brand Kay. Spoiler: It’s a little cheaper than the designer bag. Founder Ine Verhaert explains how this works. “Don’t you dare dream.”

In the capital Cairo, Mathilde and Crown Princess Elisabeth opened an exhibition about Queen Elizabeth, wife of Albert I. Mathilde wore a white dress from fashion house Nathan, according to the “Garderobe Royale” website, while Elizabeth opted for a bright pink ensemble.

During a business trip, the Queen opted for classics like Scapa and Natan, and her daughter might have moved around a bit with brands like Armani or Veja, a sneaker brand. But most important: the bag, made in Belgium, that slung around the princess’ arm.

A real surprise

It is from the Kaai brand, which was founded in 2017 by two women from Antwerp, Ine Verhaert and Helga Meersmans. They design bags for work and life and our princess got that message very well, choosing the new little bow from the Spring-Summer 23 collection while visiting her work.

We sent the bag to the Royal House, but we never dared to dream about it.

Co-founder Ine Verhaert

“We didn’t know that the Crown Princess would be carrying our bag. It was a surprise to us, too,” co-founder Ine Verhaert tells us. “Of course we are proud. We sent the handbag for Queen Mathilde’s 50th birthday. By the way, the first time we did something like this. We wrote on a card that the bag was for her and her daughter. We especially wanted the royal family to wear more Belgian brands, after all they are better Ambassadors for Belgian fashion.

A few weeks later, the ladies of Kay received a letter of thanks from the court, in particular from Her Majesty’s secretary. “But we never dreamed that Crown Princess Elizabeth would be spotted with this bag on her first international business trip.”

How did they like the look? Successful, Clint it. “The bright pink outfit made the cream-coloured bag stand out even more. Our princess clearly chooses her own style, which makes her internationally recognized as an icon of style. This will raise our brand visibility even more: who knows, maybe the Dutch royal family will pick it up too and we will soon see the Crown Prince Princess Amalia showing up with Kai’s handbag?

What is the effect?

Celebrities or royals appearing in a (unknown) brand: It’s every brand’s dream. Especially when you know that it is often a harbinger of success. For example, the Essentiel Antwerp jacket was worn by actress Lily Collins in “Emily in Paris” and it sold out soon after.

When we look at the royals, we see that when Kate Middleton appears in brands like Zara, these pieces also go out the door. In Kay, Elizabeth’s appearance hasn’t yet completely sold her. “The photos were widely circulated and shared on social media that day,” Verhart says. “We get a lot of calls from the media and customers, but it doesn’t mean that the bag in question sold out in one day. We’re seeing more interest in the model and the brand in general.”
