The tech company’s decision is a radical break from the recent past. In 2019, the social media decided to ban all political ads. The first step in that change was taken last January, when certain types of political ads were allowed again, such as ads touting voter registration in the United States.
Reuters hopes the decision to re-allow political ads will help the company boost its revenue. When Elon Musk bought then-Twitter, he cut a number of employees, including numerous employees who were supposed to enforce house rules against hateful or discriminatory messages.
Users previously banned from Twitter were also allowed to return to the now-rebranded site. Many advertisers disliked these interventions, but ended their ad campaigns on former Twitter. As a result, advertising revenue has halved.
To address concerns about harmful political content, X announced the move on its company blog on Tuesday. For example, there will be a global ‘Transparency Centre’, which will allow users to see which ads they see on the platform and where they come from. According to X, false information that attempts to manipulate elections will also be banned.
