Gert Verhulst presented the fantastic new musical Red Star Line on Monday afternoon at Studio 100 Pop Up Theater in Puurs. Flemish creativity will be the main heir to the music 40-45, with a unique live experience as well. Visitors are transported from Antwerp to New York, both on land and on water. The world premiere is scheduled for March 19, 2023.
At the end of the 19th and early 20th centuries, Antwerp was a springboard from where the large ocean ships of the Red Star Line Shipping departed for New York. The impressive Red Star Line Museum is also located in the original buildings of the shipping company, near the original columns of Het Eilandje. So there is a close cooperation with the city of Antwerp and the museum about the musical. The show is inspired by the story of the shipping company and the life stories of Red Star Line passengers, which are told in the museum’s original hangars.
This time too, Studio 100 can count on a string of top names to bring production to life. As mainstays of previous productions, Gilly Clemens and Jonas van Geel are back again. Lotte Stevens and Ianth Tavernier are recruited for Marie. Together, Jean and Marie form the core couple in this musical.
World premiere in March 2023
For the music, the audience will be seated on eight giant mobile platforms controlled by a navigation system. This scene gives an extra dynamic character and the audience can enjoy a unique 360 degree experience with the scene as the center.
“After the incredible success of the 40-45, I am pleased to present today the great successor to Red Star Line. It will once again be a huge and amazing production based on a piece of Flemish history that we definitely want to tell. Anyway, I am really looking forward to the world premiere on March 19th. 2023”, says Gert Verholst.
Mayor Bart de Wever was also present at the performance: “Expected to be a great spectacle,” he wrote on Instagram.
