“Planet Earth wouldn’t be Planet Earth without David, so I’m thrilled to have him presenting series three,” says Gunton. “As always, he brought his tremendous enthusiasm and wisdom.” Filming for the TV series has already begun in Britain. In the series, Attenborough follows in the footsteps of one of his personal heroes, biologist Charles Darwin. “It seems like the perfect setting for David to present Planet Earth III and remind us of the wonder and fragility of our planet.”

Attenborough’s previous series Wild Isles was already thought to be his last film project on location. During that series, when he climbed to the top of Skomer Island, he was accompanied by a doctor carrying a defibrillator. The producers also claimed they had to change their filming plans for fear the presenter would get too close to the seabirds, contract bird flu and die. But now everything seems to indicate that “Planet Earth III” will be his last introductory work.

Planet Earth is one of the BBC’s most popular nature programmes. The final series will be broadcast on BBC One later this year. It is not yet known whether the series will also be broadcast in Flanders.
