The group held its final public meeting on Monday. Committee members had to vote on a recommendation to potentially impeach Donald Trump, declaring the committee’s vice chairman “unfit to hold new office.”
Members, seven Democrats and two Republicans, tonight presented the results of their months-long investigation into what happened on January 6, 2021. A thousand people were asked, mountains of documents were reviewed and scrutinized, and many mediated public hearings took place. According to committee members, it’s clear from those results that Trump bears some responsibility for the Capitol storm.
“Voting in America is an act of faith and trust,” Democrat Penny Thompson said at the start of Monday’s debate. “That trust in our system is the bedrock of American democracy. When trust is damaged, all democracy is damaged. Donald Trump damaged that trust. He lost the 2020 election, knew it, but still tried to live. Power.”

The committee’s vote is largely symbolic, as members cannot impeach the former president. Ultimately, the Justice Minister must decide whether or not to prosecute.
