You'll never guess the most fuel-efficient car brand in America after Tesla

Because of their big cars with gas-guzzling engines, America isn't exactly known for its economy. So it's interesting to see which car brands have the lowest emissions here. Tesla is logically the number one EV brand, but which brand is second?

We discovered this in an investigation EPA – United States Environmental Protection Agency. The American company – committed to protecting public health and the environment – publishes an annual report detailing developments in the automotive world in the field of emissions.

The organization recently released its 2023 report and it covers cars for the 2022 model year. Eco-friendly car brands measure how economical they are based on two criteria: the vehicles fuel (or electricity) and how much CO2 the car brand contains. Emissions of an average car.

No wonder Tesla is on top

It's no surprise that Tesla is emerging as the most environmentally friendly car brand. Since the brand only produces electric cars, it theoretically emits no CO2. But Tesla is an absolute star in the economy.

These car brands are above average economical

After Tesla, the battle became hotter. It turns out to be the second most economical car brand Hyundai should be. Korean cars use an average of 8.1 liters per 100 kilometers (1 in 12.4). Hyundai emits an average of 188 grams of CO2 per kilometer per car. Honda It completed the top 3 with an average consumption of 8.2 liters per 100 kilometers (1 in 12.2) and CO2 emissions of 192 grams per kilometer.

Also Kia, Subaru, Toyota, Nissan and Mazda scored above average. Please note: for US standards and Europe, such figures are the stuff of dreams.

Numbers shared by EPA. Please note: Figures are in miles (mile = 1.61 kilometers) and gallons (gallon = 3.785 liters).

…These brands hung low

The average for all brands was between 9.4 and 9 liters per 100 kilometers (consumption) and between 209 and 222 grams (CO2 per km). By these standards, brands like BMW, Mercedes, Ford and General Motors (including Buick, Cadillac, GMC and Chevrolet) scored below average. Fun fact: in Europe, average CO2 emissions of new passenger cars in 2022 will be 'only' 108.2 g/km.

Stellandis the Red Lantern. The Stellandis car models available in the US achieve an average consumption figure of 11 liters per 100 kilometers (1 in 9) and emit an average of 258 grams of CO2 per kilometer. Not surprising when you consider that Stellandis brands Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram trucks, models not exactly known for their low consumption and emissions.
