Immortals by Aveum Impressions: It’s kind of a magical preview

After I did a few months ago Immortals of Aveum: We played the best surprise of 2023 “target=”_blank”> Eirik’s preview of Immortals of Aveum I found myself marking July 20th on my calendar as it seemed pretty clear that EA’s Ascendant Studios was the winner with its magical Call of Duty-esque project. After getting my hands-on with Immortals of Aveum (pronounced ay-vee-um if you were wondering), I’m still very excited about this promising suspenseful cinematic shooter.

Since we’ve touched on it before, I’ll touch very briefly on the story at the center of Immortals of Aveum. You play as Jak, an immortal creature tasked with helping destroy an invading force led by a powerful magic user named Sandrakk. Under the command of General Kirkan led by Gina Torres, it will take you into the world to fight in fantastic environments, including huge magic walking mechanisms, on the ruined front lines, in the lush jungles and all against a large number of enemies, whether they are ordinary magic-deadly soldiers, or even deadly dragons.

The most important part of the Immortals of Aveum story isn’t necessarily the concept behind it, but the way it’s told. Like Call of Duty’s campaign, the story is flashy, big budget, and full of exciting cutscenes and moments, but unlike Call of Duty, Immortals seems to add a bit of real player freedom through side missions, progression, oddly enough. Layered loot system. I will say that I’m not a huge fan of this latest installment, as it seems like it could introduce unnecessary complexity to a game that shines in its core gameplay elements – with its story telling and magic systems.

For the most part, magic is a three-part system where players switch between green, red, and blue magic systems. Red is your approach magic and is the equivalent of guns etc. Blue is your ranged magic, perfect for getting rid of ranged threats. Finally, Green is the middle man of the group and is best described as an assault rifle (or Needler for Halo fans) in public shooter talk. It’s easy to switch between each at will and requires you to do exactly that to conquer fortified enemies and solve environmental puzzles, with a truly thrilling and exciting flow, backed by additional skills and moves that allow Yak to tear through threats and slash through opponents that stand in his way.

All you have to do is watch the trailer to get a sense of what kinds of production value Immortals of Aveum will provide. It feels excellent and has that polished finish to a Call of Duty campaign, even if Immortals wanted to shed the familiar stigma attached to the Activision series by baking in a lot of player-focused elements. Building progression and crafting lets you tailor Jack to suit how you want to play, and additional side quests and objectives mean there’s more to do beyond the core story, but the long main story will keep you engaged. Whatever you are looking for.

While I was only able to play a snippet of the wider Immortals of Aveum experience, one that didn’t let the story take center stage despite some tense moments, the gameplay and presentation shined effortlessly. Magic systems feel responsive and easy to understand, yet they have a depth that allows seasoned players to master them in interesting ways, and the graphics and performance didn’t detract from the impression the trailers gave – even if they did get some serious glitches. This is an early build, which will no doubt be fixed by launch time.

With July steadily approaching, Immortals of Aveum has the perfect opportunity to tap into the gaming space and make its mark on it. If you haven’t caught up with this magical FPS yet, you must be very excited about this game, as it has the perfect combination of high production, flashy, tight gameplay, and a unique premise that allows it to (hopefully) serve as the jumping off point for a whole new franchise. While nothing has been confirmed on this front yet, Ascendant CEO and Immortals of Aveum game director Brett Robbins told us: “There is much more to this world and story than we have said so far.” So the door is officially open for more of this universe to come, and while Immortals of Aveum has yet to be released, this gets me really excited.
